Istanbul University is the direct successor of Darülfünun which is accepted as the first European style university of Ottoman Empire. As the roots and some of the units date back to the Sahn-ı Seman Madrasa, the Islamic school founded by the order of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror the day after the conquest of Istanbul on May, 30th of 1453, the establishment of the university is accepted to go back to these dates. The current university was founded in 1933.
