21st ISTANBUL THEATER FESTIVAL STARTSThe 21st Istanbul Theater Festival raises its curtain on 13 November with a wide-ranging programme. Until 26 November, thirteen Turkish plays, together with six plays from abroad, will meet the theater-goers at eighteen different venues.
Began in 1989, the Istanbul Theater Festival has been held biennially from 2002 onwards until last year. Starting this year, the Istanbul Theatre Festival will be held annually to enrich Istanbul's cultural life with its rich programme of international and local theatre and dance performances.
The 21st Istanbul Theater Festival will host six theater and dance ensembles from abroad. The festival audience will meet with play Encore, staged by the Attis Theatre, founded and directed by the legendary Theodoros Terzopoulos. The French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, who will receive the Honorary Award this year, will also meet the audience with his latest work La Fresque.
The festival programme also includes the Italian immersive theatre ensemble TPO’s Farfalle, which invites audiences of all ages to see the world through the eyes of the butterflies; Portuguese director Pedro Penim’s Before, a performance that travels back in time; and Seuls, an emotionally charged play by the Lebanese-Canadian playwright and director Wajdi Mouawad about his search for himself.
Thirteen plays from Turkey will have their premieres at the festival. Checkhov’s The Seagull directed by one of the remarkable directors of Turkey’s contemporary theatre stage Serdar Biliş; The Dinner, under the direction of Volkan M. Sarıöz, staged by Semaver Kumpanya; and Home, written and directed by Sami Berat Marçalı, are among the Turkish plays of this year’s festival. Also, the profound and silent master of the human darkness of Turkish literature Nahid Sirri Örik’s never-before-staged play Betrayal, directed by Özen Yula and staged by Ankara State Theatre, will meet the audience for the first time.
The 21st Istanbul Theater Festival programme also features a number of events that will be free, including panels, film screenings, master classes and workshops with the participation of international guests and experts.
The student tickets for all the plays of the festival will be 10TL.
